Profile Picture field

Case study · WordPress plugin
A WordPress plugin I built in 2019 and still maintain: it gives any user a profile picture from the Media Library instead of a Gravatar. 4,000+ active installs, rated 5/5 on WordPress.org.
Start a projectMany sites want profile pictures without asking every user to sign up for Gravatar. With User Profile Picture, a picture is chosen on the user’s profile screen with the standard WordPress media uploader, and it then appears wherever WordPress shows that user’s avatar. In the 2026 releases I made it work with code that asks for the avatar URL (the REST API, page builders and GraphQL), kept the Avatar block’s styling, added a Remove button and tightened security.

Key features
Version 1.0.10, tested up to WordPress 7.1.4 (requires WordPress 4.5 and PHP 7.4). No settings page; works with block themes, classic themes and multisite.

Pictures are uploaded or chosen with WordPress’s own media uploader and served from your site, so users don’t need a Gravatar account.

Comments, author boxes, the toolbar, the Users screen, the Avatar block, the REST API and any code that calls get_avatar() or get_avatar_url().
